My multi-faceted reverie

Twitter Weekly Updates for 2011-01-30

This might be a record

I had Becca help me pin my headphone cord to my shirt, because there are few things more annoying than your earbuds getting pulled out midway through a run.

I would like to highlight a specific one of those things. Stepping into a pothole full of icy cold water less than a block into your run is not very high up on my “favorite ways to start a run” list… not that I actually have such a list. If I did, however, you can be sure that stepping into a cold puddle would not be on it.

But yeah… I was looking really stylish with my headphones pinned to my shirt. Don’t you agree?

Yes, the calendar behind me is still on November 2010... don't judge me.

I also tried out a different set of layers. Instead of wearing a couple shirts and a bulky sweatshirt, I put on multiple long sleeve shirts and put a t-shirt on over them. It actually worked really well, and I think that’s what I’ll do on Saturday for the 5k.

But that’s enough talk for now. It’s time for bed, so here are tonight’s numbers:

Jog around the block

1.63mi, 21:11min, 13:06 min/mi pace

I’m not sure, but that may be a new personal best… remind me to check later.

Peace out.

Finally got to run outside again…

After all the snow we’ve had, I finally got a chance to run outside again. This is a good thing, considering I’m doing an outdoor 5k in just 4 more days. I also got to take my dog with me, which got him out of the house for the first time in over a week. He loves to go run with me, but with the roads the way they have been it’s all I can do to keep from falling over as it is.

On a related note: I hate black ice… that stuff can go right to hell.

Tonight’s numbers

Walk/jog with Orion

1.59mi, 27:00min, 16:58 min/mi pace

Not too terrible for my first day back outside…

I’m not quite sure how I am going to work it out, but I am going to try and run tomorrow night. Thursday I have a lab, and I’d like to get in a run tomorrow and a short one Friday to prep for my 5k on Saturday.

And now I’m off to bed… have to be up in a little over 4 hours to start getting ready for work and school for the day. Yippee.

Sunday morning run

Still ridiculously cold outside, so I went to Holcom Rec Center again to use their treadmills.

Walk/jog to Holcom Rec Center

Yesterday’s total

2.29mi, 32:23min, 14:08 min/mi pace

Last week’s totals

Just under half of what I was hoping for, but the weather didn’t help. That, and I should probably try and pace myself better from now on. At Saturday’s 5k, I definitely plan to take it a little easier than I did on the treadmill last week.

Monday:

Walk/jog to Holcom Rec Center

0.32mi, 5:27min, 15:23 min/mi pace

No run today…

Even though I only ran a little over a mile last night, I’m still tender from Monday’s beatdown. I’ll post my end-of-week numbers later in the afternoon.

For now, I’m going to go spend some time with Becca.

Not going to make it…

… to 10 miles for the week that is. I blame this:

The sidewalk on the way to Holcom Rec Center

and this:

And this is what I had to run through to get to that sidewalk...

Still, it wasn’t a completely bad night for running… except when you consider that my phone lost its data connection 5 minutes in and I couldn’t get my Pandora tunes to load. Plus, my run-mapping app wouldn’t upload my run data, so I had to write it down the old fashioned way.

Oh yeah, and there was someone on the treadmill already… I just could not win tonight. Here are the numbers from my jog to/from Holcom:

Walk/jog to Holcom Rec Center

0.41mi, 5:50min, 14:13 min/mi pace
MapMyRun workout

Walk/jog home from Holcom

0.74mi, 11:35min, 15:42 min/mi pace

Total:

1.15mi, 17:25min, 15:08 min/mi pace

Not terrible… but I really need to find a treadmill on Craigslist. The only question is, where the hell would I put it?

And now to go entertain the friends I’ve got coming over. I think I’ll post something embarrassing about Nick and Emily at some point in the future. They’re good kids, those two. ;)

Gotta run tonight…

After the weather the past couple days and resting my knee, I’m not sure I will hit my 10 mile goal for the week. But if I run ~2.5 miles on the treadmill tonight and tomorrow, I should _just_ get there.

~1/3mi jog each way to Holcom (x2 round trips)
~2.5mi today and tomorrow on the treadmill

4/3mi + 5mi = I hate math… a little under 6.5mi.

Add that to my 3.73mi from Monday, and I just might get it.

Here’s hoping.

Starting another semester

As I get ready to start the next (and possibly hardest) step in my college journey, I want to bring you (the people of the interwebs who may visit this site in the future… though not necessarily the three people who currently read my blog) up to speed.

After coming back to school in Fall 2008, I have taken 14 classes totaling 51 credit hours. It’s not quite a full-time load, but by taking summer classes I am managing to stay relatively on track. In addition to just taking classes, I have been admitted to KU’s School of Engineering as a Computer Science major.

In the Spring ’11 semester, I may have my biggest challenges yet. I am taking 3 classes for 11 credit hours – nearly full time – while working my full-time job at KU, working with Nick on Eternal Second projects (I need to write an update about how that’s picking up as well!), and increasing the amount of freelance work that I am doing. Sadly, I’m not taking easy classes; one of them has been described to me as the “hardest class I will have in my entire time at KU”.

But I’m going to do it. I will kick ass this semester – and probably have a minor break down at least once. At the end of it, I know I will come out the victor.

So that’s the latest on the school front. If all goes well and stays on track, I should be graduating at the end of the Spring ’13 semester. That’s right, only two years to go!

Catch you later.

No run tonight

After yesterday’s run, I can barely stand (and even came home early from work to rest my legs).

Here’s hoping they feel better tomorrow.
